Athletes from every team among Warren, Eisenhower and Youngsville have a chance to win some hardware at Saturday’s District 10 Class 2A Track and Field Championships at Slippery Rock University.
“Qualifying for states” being the goal for Youngsville senior Blake Myers, who is seeded first in high jump at 6-foot-4 among jumpers from 37 schools.
The top two athletes in each event automatically qualify for the PIAA 2A Championships, along with anyone who achieves the predetermined state qualifying standard. The SQS in boys 2A high jump is 6-3.
“He has hit 6-3 several times this season,” said Youngsville track coach John Victor. “That’s been the thought process all season; let the medal fall where it falls. It’s about making it to states.”
Myers was a D10 medalist in high jump and long jump a season ago. The top eight athletes in each event earn medals.
“Just making it to states is the goal right now, but we will figure it out once we get there,” said Myers of districts. “My PR is 6-4, but I’m working towards qualifying for states; 6-3 will get me there, so I’m focusing on that.”
There are several Dragons seeded in the top eight in D10 events.
“Best shot (for states is) girls 4×1 (relay), Lilly (Newton) in 400, Laney (Gatto) in pole vault,” said Warren coach Kevin Dustin. “Really hoping to get some into medaling contention… We also have a few that could get auto times if they really do well.”
Warren’s 4×100 relay team of Newton, Lindsay Madigan, Maddie Nosel, and Gatto is seeded third, less than a second off of top-seeded Sharpsville’s 50.55 seconds. Newton, a freshman, is the third seed in the 400 meters at 1:00.64. Gatto is seeded fifth in the pole vault at nine feet and has been looking at the WAHS record of 9-6.
Other top-eight seeds for Warren include: Shyann Rulander in the 1,600 and 3,200, along with teammate Morgan Alexander in the 3,200; Madigan in triple jump, Newton in high jump, and Jenna Kophazy, javelin. For the boys, Sam Lindell is top-eight in the 3,200 and Ethan Best in the 300 hurdles.
In addition to Myers, Youngsville’s Ethan Beers is seeded in long jump and triple jump.
Eisenhower’s Mackenzie Dunn (fourth) and Logan Grove (sixth) are both top-eight seeds in girls’ shot.
