A driver who died in a horror highway crash in the Mackay region will “live on” in the lives he saved by donating his organs.
The devastating crash occurred on May 5 when the vehicle Ben Wallwork was driving crashed into a tree off the Bruce Highway at Chelona.
Police are investigating whether or not he had a medical episode at the time of the crash.
The 34 year old, known as Benny, was seriously injured and trapped in the wreckage and had to be extracted.
He was initially taken to Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition before being flown to Townsville University Hospital’s intensive care unit.
While he was fighting for his life in hospital his partner Annie Johnson had started a GoFundMe campaign to help his parents, which raised $8715.
Sadly Mr Wallwork died 11 days after the crash on May 16 as a result of his injuries.
“It is with much sadness that I let you all know that we lost our Benny this morning,” family member Tammi Percival wrote on the GoFundMe page.
“His injuries were too severe for survival.
“Benny will live on in the organ recipients he will help.
“Thank you for all of your support and love sent our way.”
Ms Johnson described Mr Wallwork, known has Benny, as “genuine, caring and ever so support(ive)”.
Mr Wallwork, a former cherry picker, had moved to Mackay in August 2022 from his hometown Young in regional New South Wales.
A funeral service was held for Mr Wallwork in his hometown on May 28.

“Benny was a much loved son, big brother, uncle, grandson and nephew,” a funeral note said.
“The best friend that anyone could ask for.”
Ms Percival offered her thanks for the support the family had received since Mr Wallwork’s crash.
“We would like to thank you all for your love and support. It has helped us all very much to know Benny was so loved,” she said.
Mackay’s Forensic Crash unit is investigating the incident for a report for the coroner.
