Connor Doyal’s second round Saturday in the City Amateur championship wasn’t as exciting as his opening day at Charleston Municipal Golf Course, but he managed to retain a four-shot lead heading into the final round.
Doyal, who opened the tournament with an 8-under-par 64, shot 1-under 71 Saturday and is at 9-under 135. Christopher Asbell, the 2019 winner, is second at 139 after a second-round 71. Wade Wawner is third at 140 after a bogey-free 67 Saturday. Cameron MacKay (73) and Chandler Mulkey (71) are tied for fourth at 141.
Doyal was 3-over for his round through 12 holes Saturday with five bogeys and two birdies on his card. But he rallied by playing the next three holes 4-under, with birdies on 13 and 14 and an eagle on the 15th before parring in for his 71.
Asbell’s 71 was also somewhat erratic. He started on the ninth hole with a bogey, got that back with a birdie on 10, then triple-bogeyed the par-4 12th and bogeyed the par-4 13th. A birdie at 14, eagle at 15 and birdie at 18 got him back to even-par. He bogeyed 1 but birdied 2 and 7 to get to 1-under for the day.
