Choral group Index Cantorum are returning to Dornoch Cathedral for two informal performances on separate days next week.
Around 14-16 members of the group will sing at the cathedral in the late afternoon on Tuesday, May 30, and in the early evening of the following Saturday, June 3.
Index Cantorum director Mark Williams said: “It will all be very informal, in the manner of open rehearsal or a pop-up concert, with people free to wander around the building as they would normally.”
Founded in 1988, the group, members of which are based in England, describes itself as a “list of singers who, on occasion, take a break from professional commitments, musical or otherwise, to sing purely for pleasure”.
Its repertoire spans several centuries and includes familiar favourites and lesser-known pieces, often specially edited from original sources.
Index Cantorum’s first public performance was a concert in the London Church of St Paul’s Covent Garden and the group has since gone on to appear at festivals and services in a number of cathedrals, largely at Winchester Cathedral.
Index Cantorum last appeared at Dornoch Cathedral in 2017 with ‘Caledonian Connexions’ when it also performed at the Falls of Shin and Cromarty.
Dornoch Cathedral is also hosting Highland choral group Musick Fyne on Thursday, June 8, from 8pm. Admission programmes for the concert will be on sale at the door for £10 in aid of the cathedral and Highland Hospice.
A number of other events are also scheduled to take place at the cathedral later this summer including a concert in aid of Highland Support Refugees on Friday, June 30; a concert by solo pianist Robin Colvill on Thursday, August 3; and an appearance by young chamber choir Elikuren, from Germany, on Sunday, August 6.
And Scottish Opera brings its summer pop-up tour to the cathedral’s West Church Hall on Saturday, June 24.
Willie Mackay, of Dornoch Cathedral, said: “Dornoch Cathedral’s popularity as a music venue continues to grow with an exciting programme of performances this summer.”
