Ready to clear out unwanted chemical waste from your home? Smoke detectors, pool chemicals, pesticides and poisons are just some of the problem waste items and household chemicals that you can safely and simply dispose of FREE of charge, at Wingecarribee’s Household Chemical CleanOut event on Sunday 21 May 2023, from 9am until 3:30pm.
Colo Vale resident, Katrina, who attended last year’s Chemical CleanOut event said involvement in programs like this is a great way to keep problem waste out of landfill. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for us to clean out our chemicals, I like that it is a free service and protects our environment from incorrect disposal,” she said.
“To protect the natural environment we all love here in the Highlands, and for the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our community, unwanted chemicals must always be properly disposed of and never poured down drains or sinks or placed in kerbside bins,” said Council’s Waste Education Officer, Alyssa Villar.
So what chemicals can residents drop off during this event? Quantities of 20 kilogram or 20 litre maximum container size of:
- household cleaners,
- fluorescent globes and tubes,
- car and household batteries,
- motor oils and fluids,
- paints,
- garden, pool and hobby chemicals,
- gas bottles, fire extinguishers and
Entry to the drop-off point at Council’s Moss Vale Works Depot is via Parkes Road, Moss Vale. For your safety, please remain in your vehicle while operators do the heavy lifting for you and remove the unwanted items from car boots, trays or trailers.
The Chemical CleanOut is a NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, funded from the Waste Levy and supported by Council’s Environment Levy.
“While this cleanout event is the best way to dispose of a wide variety of problem waste, the Community Recycling Centre is a permanent drop-off facility for common household items,” she said. “Residents can drop off items year-round, free of charge.” You’ll find our Community Recycling Centre within the grounds of the nearby Resource Recovery Centre.
