DETAILED plans are to be unveiled tonight for the second phase of the Lagan Gateway project in south Belfast.
Enhancing public walkways, the first phase cost around £5m and in 2021 saw the opening of a new foot and cycle bridge connecting the Lagan Towpath and the Annadale embankment.
It also included a new navigation lock, refurbishment of the existing weir as well as landscaping and the new path connections.
The second phase is to include a greenway connection from Lagan Lands East to Belvoir Forest Park, also forming part of the Department for Infrastructure’s Belfast Cycling Network.
Following a public consultation last year, a public drop-in session will be held today between 5pm and 8pm at the YMCA building, Knightsbridge Park, Stranmillis.
Commenting ahead of the meeting, Alliance councillor Micky Murray urged residents to make their voices heard, adding “there’s been a lot of concern regarding wildlife and protecting the forest”.
Last month, he also raised concern over the disrepair of the pedestrian Brown Bridge on the Lagan Towpath.
Closed to the public in February as it was deemed unsafe, Mr Murray said repairs had been due to take place in March.
“Frustratingly, the work hasn’t started yet, and the new date for work to begin is ‘summer,’” he said.
“Obviously, this is very poor as the bridge has been closed for months already.”
