Ron Hughes, and his wife Diane, 65 and 57, who both lived in Neston, lost their lives following a crash involving two helicopters on the Gold Coast in Australia on Monday, January 2.
The couple were visiting his daughter, Jane, and her family in Australia when the tragedy occurred.
Ron opened a shop on the Neston high street 37 years ago, and in February 1992 he named the business Concept Interiors selling curtain fabric, blinds, floor coverings and wall coverings across Wirral, Cheshire, Liverpool and North Wales.
Since the couple’s death, Ron’s daughter, Faye Hughes, 24, has kept the shop open and has continued to run the business.
‘I just knew I was going to continue it’
In an interview with the Globe, she said: “I always worked for my dad. I was helping him run the place shop before and he worked so hard.
“It was never really a thought to close the shop, I just knew I was going to continue it.
“I said to the team if you can’t stay, you don’t have to, but they all stayed and have been so supportive.”
Faye went on to say she was “overwhelmed” by the support from the people of Neston and beyond.
“It’s been so nice because we’ve had customers come back after 30 years”, she said.
“Local people have come back and even local businesses have started using us now as well. Our regulars have been recommending us to friends which is really nice.
“People just come in to show their support and say their sorry for what has happened.”
Speaking about her dad, Faye said Ron was very well-known in the community.
She said: “He couldn’t walk down the street without someone saying hello to him.
“He was just so well-loved by people and everyone says to me how he was such a gentleman and so kind which is really nice.
“We have good and bad days. We still do things as if he’s going to say ‘Why are you doing it that way?’
“We’re like a big family in the shop so it’s helped all being together. We’re a very friendly business.”
Faye also explained that her family in Australia and locally are all very happy she has continued the business.
“They are all happy. They all say that’s what dad would’ve wanted and say he would be so proud”, she said.
“All the family have helped. There isn’t one family member who hasn’t been involved.”
