Darwin-born driver Bryce Fullwood has taken a humbling trip down memory lane in a visit to his old primary school.
Brad Jones Racing driver Fullwood is in town for this weekend’s betr Darwin Triple Crown, Round 5 of the 2023 Supercars season.
Fullwood was the first — and so far, only — Darwin-born driver in the Repco Supercars Championship.
In the build-up to this weekend’s event, Fullwood made a visit to Leanyer Primary School, where he first started in 2002.
There, the 2019 Super2 champion — accompanied by the Peter Brock Trophy — was asked some curly questions by students.
“It’s been a long time — I started here in 2002 at pre-school,” Fullwood told Supercars.com.
“It’s been a fair walk down memory lane for me, which has been really exciting.
“The place has changed a bit, but it’s also similar in so many ways.”
Fullwood has raced in the main game since 2020, debuting full-time with Walkinshaw Andretti United before joining BJR in 2022.
The 25-year-old is chasing his maiden podium with the Albury team, and is 14th in the drivers’ standings heading to Darwin.
Inspiring the next generation of Northern Territory racers is a key passion for Fullwood.
In 2021, Fullwood created a competition that saw five Darwin Karting Association (DKA) youngsters, aged 7-15, take a tour of the WAU garage.
It was with his time with the DKA, in 2014, when Fullwood became the first Territorian to secure a ticket to the Rotax World Championships in Valencia, Spain.
While some three years into his Supercars career, Fullwood remains humble, and was brought back to his roots on Wednesday thanks to some inquisitive students.
“The kids were really excited actually, when I walked in,” said Fullwood, who later completed his education at Darwin High School.
“Got some really good questions from the kids — had a few questions about, ‘Does it hurt when you crash?’ or, ‘How fast do you go?’
“I had one really good question — what inspired me to be a racing car driver — which threw me a little bit, it was a good question.
“When I was their age, I didn’t think it was possible to be where I am today.
“I want to help inspire some of these kids to show, with persistence and heart, what you can actually achieve.”
All drivers will take part in a signing session at Darwin’s Waterfront on Thursday afternoon from 5:00pm to 6:30pm local time.
Supercars will be on track on all three days of the betr Darwin Triple Crown. Tickets are on sale now.
