Dan Ippolito, aged 66, died at home June 11 after a 22-month fight with glioblastoma (brain cancer).
Daniele “Dan” Fausto Michele Ippolito was born April 18, 1957, in Alexandria, Egypt. He grew up in Rome, Zambia, Libya, and Sudan, because his father was an executive for Alitalia Airlines. He came to the United States in 1975 to attend college and earned his U.S. citizenship in 1988. He graduated from Yale University in 1979 with a bachelor of science in biology and from the University of Texas at Austin with his PhD in zoology in 1985. After a teaching assignment at the University of New England, Dan joined the biology faculty at Anderson University. During the summers he taught aquatic ecology at the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies in Mancelona, Michigan. He also taught special courses for Creation Care in New Zealand and Costa Rica. He retired from AU in 2022 after 33 years of service.
Dan is survived by his mother, Mirella (Gaeta) Ippolito of Sao Paulo, Brazil; his wife, Kimberly Lyle-Ippolito of Anderson; two children, Catherine Ippolito and Phillip Ippolito, both of Anderson; three stepchildren, Timothy Perrine of New Brunswick, New Jersey, Monique Bennett (Lynch) of Nashville, Tennessee, and Daniel Perrine (Rebekah) of Norfolk, Virginia; three grandchildren, Ulysses, Sterling, and Rosamund Perrin of Norfolk, Virginia; brother, Luca Ippolito of Baltimore, Maryland; nieces, Gabriella Ippolito (Patrick McGuire) of Washington D.C., and Francesca Ippolito of Baltimore, Maryland; and nephews, Mattia Ippolito of Washington D.C., and Adriano Ippolito of Glen Burnie, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his father, Veniero Ippolito.
Mass will be held at 10 a.m. June 22 St. Mary Catholic Church, 1115 Pearl St., Anderson. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
