Guyanese Elton Dharry and Dexter Marques secured victory in contrasting fashion on Saturday evening when Bris-O Promotion in partnership with the Guyana Boxing Association and the Guyana Boxing Board of Control staged its first-ever ‘Return of the Scorpion’ Pro/Am boxing card.
The 10-fight event, featuring an equal share of amateur and professional bouts, was held at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, and attracted a massive crowd in an atmosphere that surely lived up to what promoter Seon Bristol and GBA president Steve Ninvalle had promised in the lead-up.

The card ended in the wee hours of Sunday when ring announcer, the effervescent Ean McPherson, announced Dharry had emerged champion of his eight-round Bantamweight main contest against Colombian Ronald Ramos, pulling off a Unanimous Decision verdict.
The 37-year-old US-based Dharry, who was using this bout as essentially a warm-up for a Commonwealth title shot in Guyana in July, had to dig deep to stave off a spirited battle from a man nine years his senior.
While Dharry called on all his experience to convince the judges, who scored the contest 80-73, 79-73, 79-73, nothing adverse can be said of Ramos, who surprised the arena by taking the bout the distance.
The Colombian, a veteran of now 72 fights (43-25-4), gave Dharry the type of workout that will hopefully hold him in good stead ahead of that title shot next month.
With the victory, his 24th in his 25 fights, Dharry has improved to 27-6-1.
Marques, Dharry’s local training partner, dominated Colombian Luis Carrillo, who was down for the count 1:03s in round four of the eight-round Super Bantamweight bout.
It was sweet victory for Marques, who suffered a Split Decision defeat in his last fight against Venezuela Gilberto Pedroza last April at the National Stadium, Providence.
While he improved to 18-3-0, Carrillo dropped to 19-24-1.
On the amateur segment, the Jackman sisters- Alesha and Abiola- were hoping for clean sweep, but Alesha lost to Jamaican Britney McFarlene and Abiola won against Lee Ann Boodram of Trinidad and Tobago.
Both fights were determined by Unanimous Decision.
