Connor Doyal notched seven birdies and an eagle Friday on his way to a sizzling 8-under-par 64 and a four-stroke lead after the opening round of the City Amateur championship at Charleston Municipal Golf Course.
Christopher Asbell, the 2019 champion, and Cameron MacKay both shot 68. Asbell’s round was bogey-free with four birdies. MacKay made two eagles, three birdies and three bogeys.
James Millard is fourth after shooting 69 and Chandler Mulkey is fifth after posting a 70. Austin Morgan, who won the event in 2021, is tied for sixth at even-par 72 along with Joshua Traylor, Ford Blanchard and Clark Truluck. The tournament continues through Sunday.
Doyal bogeyed his starting hole, No. 9, but played the next four holes in 4-under, making an eagle-3 on 10, a birdie on the par-3 11th, par on the par-4 12th and a birdie on the par-4 13th. He added birdies on the par-5 15th and par-4 16th before returning to the front side at 5-under for the day. Consecutive birdies on 5, 6 and 7 gave him an 8-under round and a four-shot lead.
