Every event was unique, showcasing the whole industry, from arable, horticulture, livestock and agro-forestry to the science and technology involved. Farmers shared the same aim of helping to bridge the farm and fork disconnect and to demonstrate the industry’s commitment to sustainability, biodiversity and delivering nutritious food and a well-managed countryside.
Visiting a working farm provided a brilliant opportunity for people to talk directly with the farmers that produce our food, and understand what is involved in sustainable food production, a topic that is at the forefront of many households.
Cumbria YFC were delighted to be asked bySusan Aglionby to take part in Farm Sunday at “Susan’s Farm” at Houghton on the outskirts of Carlisle last Sunday.
“Susan’s Farm” is a working care farm focusing on educational visits for schools and community groups, therapeutic working for those with long term mental health needs and alternative provision for those who need a different learning experience.
With a vision of transforming people’s lives by encouraging them to work together in purposeful activity so they can reach their full potential, “Susan’s Farm” is a fantastic charity that the young farmers were happy to support.
Northern District Chair, Abigail Graham, Vice Chair, Ella Batey and Greysouthen YFC Secretary Rachel Armstrong volunteered on the day, with Abigail commenting“We had a brilliant day attending Open Farm Sunday at Susan’s Farm, Houghton. It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the skills of our Young Farmers, and we had a great day demonstrating stockjudging, Cumberland dialect and public speaking, as well as meeting future members and other local community groups. Thank you to Susan for inviting us along”.
Thrimby Farms near Penrith saw more than 500 people enjoy a large range of events and displays including a clipping demonstration by Murray and Willie Craig. Questions asked by the public included trade deals, re-wilding and what exactly is Mutton that chefs use on the telly.
