MAKAWAO — Alexander Academy Performing Company presents “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” This full-length ballet features music by Felix Mendelssohn, costumes by Jennifer Oberg and her Sewing Hui, and dancers from Alexander Academy of Performing Arts.
Four performances are scheduled throughout the weekend of June 2-4 at Seabury Hall’s ‘A’ali’iuhonua Creative Arts Center.
“A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” a classic tale from William Shakespeare, reminds us that love makes us do strange things. It’s a story of four Athenians who run away to the forest, only to have fairies play tricks on them, making them fall in and out of love. This beautiful production will capture you with love and comedy, in exquisite costuming, showcasing the company’s young talent through dance and acting.
“I am incredibly excited for a lot of these kids — it is their first exposure to Shakespeare. So, it’s exciting to be working on a Shakespeare play and getting to talk about the literature and history of such a classic work and getting to bring it to life as a ballet,” said Amelia Nelson, artistic director.
“I’m really excited to see a variety of characters come alive in this show. There’s a lot of diverse characters, and because it’s coming from a play and not a classical ballet, they have a lot more backstory. They are very interesting characters, I’m excited to see them come alive in their dancing, their acting and their amazing costumes,” said Co-artistic Director Absalon Figueroa.
Executive Director Danelle Watson Keenan said, “We are thrilled about the future of our academy and its many projects on the horizon. Our community’s support is so heartwarming and contagious, and I am so proud of who we are and where we are going. Our teachers inspire and support our youth. We are all so fortunate to have work we love. It’s the connections with our students and families that fill our hearts.”
