*Tuesday, May 30th is Veteran’s Free Day at the La Porte County Historical Society Museum!
To honor Memorial Day, all veterans and active duty military are welcome to come to the museum free of charge. For free admission, a form of ID is required to show that you are a veteran or active military member. Acceptable forms of ID include: Affairs Card, Indiana Veterans Card, VFW, American Legion, and Driver’s License with Veterans ID.
*A presentation at the New Buffalo Library on Tuesday, May 30 at 6:30pm Eastern will examine the Eastland disaster, the 1915 sinking of a ship bound for Michigan City that killed 844 people. Docked in the Chicago River, the S.S. Eastland carried 2,500 Western Electric employees and their families headed for an annual picnic in Washington Park. Moments after boarding, the ship rolled over on its port side in 20 feet of water, trapping passengers inside.
The disaster wiped out entire families and shocked Chicago and the nation. It remains the greatest loss-of-life event in Great Lakes history. The presenter is James Retseck, past president of the Michigan City Historical Society and the Old Lighthouse Museum.
The New Buffalo Township Library is located at 33 N. Thompson St. in downtown New Buffalo. The presentation is free and open to all and is part of the Friends of the New Buffalo Library’s Community Forum series.
Tuesday, June 6
*The Duneland Photography Club meets the first Tuesday of each month at Sunset Hill Farm County Park at 7:00pm in the Horton Family Education Center. Doors open at 5:30 for hands-on mentoring and question time. At the regular meeting at 7:00pm on June 6th Michael Caterina will be doing a presentation Storytelling Photos. Michael worked as a newspaper photojournalist for more than 10 years and is now the campus photographer/videographer at Indiana University South Bend. Michael continues to work with the South Bend Tribune as a freelancer mostly covering sports and also photographs Notre Dame basketball for the Associated Press. Michael will share insights on making storytelling photos in the many different situations working as a photojournalist has put him in over the years. Show & Tell for the month will be “The Sky, The Stars, and Looking Up.”
Last month members of the Duneland Photography Club led the public on a Photography Trail at the Sunset Hill Farm County Park for the Porter County Parks Department. There were five stations set up to teach various aspects of photography in a hands-on way.
In June, the club will be taking a field trip to Fernwood Gardens in Niles, MI. Members are also volunteering to photograph Camp Funset this summer for the Porter County Parks Department. The club will not be holding a regular meeting on the first Tuesday in July, but are planning a picnic later in July.
The Duneland Photography Club is a group of individuals helping each other improve their photography skills through classes, photoshoots, meetings, individual mentoring, community service, and other activities.

*A program at the New Buffalo Township Library on Tuesday, June 6 will look at the life of legendary escape artist Harry Houdini.The program begins at 6:30pm Eastern.
Born Erik Weisz in Budapest, Hungary, Houdini became one of the greatest showmen in history. Determined to create one death-defying stunt after another, he drove himself to physical exhaustion and left audiences mesmerized.
He escaped from locks, chains, handcuffs, jails, straitjackets and water-sealed containers, but he could not escape death at the age of 52.
Tim Moore of Lake Michigan College will present this program. Tim’s in-depth examinations of people and events in American history have made him a favorite in the library’s “Community Forum” series of educational presentations, sponsored by the Friends of the New Buffalo Library.

Friday, June 9
*St. Patrick’s Table of Plenty will serve the FREE Duneland Community Dinner on Friday, June 9, inside Chapel Hall, located at 638 North Calumet Road in Chesterton, Indiana. Dinner will be served from 3 to 4:30 pm. Everyone is welcome so please come hungry and ready to enjoy a great meal.
Saturday, June 10
*The Courtyard Gallery will be featuring two guest artists for the month of June, acrylic painter Connie Kassal and photographer Carol Estes. A reception will be held June 10th, to meet the artists and view their work from 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Michigan time.
Connie’s medium includes charcoal, oil and acrylic. She holds a Master Degree from Governors State University. Connie has taught painting and drawing at Prairie State College and Purdue University North Central.
Carol is a self-taught photographer. Her signature work involves using camera motion and shooting with a camera converted to see only infrared light.
Guest artist shows are a new series being presented by the Courtyard Gallery showcasing area artists not exhibiting at the gallery.
