SAINT ALBANS – The BFA-St. Albans Comets hosted the Burlington Seahorses for a girls’ high-school lacrosse match-up under the lights on Monday, May 15.
BFA celebrated their seniors before the game, recognizing the hard work of both the Burlington and BFA seniors before the start of the action. The Comets controlled the pace of play for most of the contest and won the match by a score of 12-6.
BFA Head Coach Mary Pipes spoke about the senior leadership on the team, ”I’ve coached a lot of these girls for a very long time. It’ll be hard to watch this group go; we’ve played a lot of lacrosse together.”
Adi Hughes kick-started the Comets’ offensive attack, scoring two quick goals just minutes into the contest. Amber Poquette added a third goal to the scoreboard, quickly following Hughes’ second goal.
Both teams settled into a rhythm following the Comets’ third goal; however, BFA continued to push the offensive efforts throughout the half. Allie and Kyra Bushey scored back-to-back goals, extending the Comet lead to 5 – 0. Rae Alexander, Sydney Lemay, Poquette, and Hughes scored one more goal each to extend the Comets’ lead to 9-0 going into halftime.
Heather L’Esperance scored a quick goal coming out of the half, extending the BFA lead to 10-0. Burlington wouldn’t go down quietly, going on a 6-0 scoring run to pull the Seahorses within four points, 10-6.
A fourth goal by Hughes and a third goal by Paquette gave the Comets a six-goal lead as time expired.
After the game, Hughes spoke of the teams’ effort and of her emotions coming into senior night, “I was super excited coming into senior night. I love all these girls, and I’ve played with most of them since we were five or six; it’s been great. We’ve had a fantastic season, and I can’t wait for the rest of it.”
BFA senior defender Jayden Walent also spoke about the game, “I was really excited coming into the game tonight. It was a great game for our seniors, and I’m looking forward to the final stretch of the season; we’re looking to be successful in playoffs.”
