Cobra Kai has been a massive success since it began back in 2018, where it first debuted on YouTube Red before making the move to Netflix with its third season in 2021. The series picks up more than 30 years after the events of the beloved 80s hit The Karate Kid, taking the point of view of a down on his luck Johnny Lawrence, who makes the decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo, and thus rekindle of his old rivalry with Daniel LaRusso.
The story has moved on a long way since then, with Johnny and Daniel eventually joining forces against the likes of Martin Kove’s John Kreese and Thomas Ian Griffith’s Terry Silver, all while training a cadre of young karate enthusiasts. Cobra Kai has seen high viewership on the streaming platform, as well as being met with praise from both critics and audiences alike, with audiences excited to see the show return for a final round.
“Our day one goal with Cobra Kai has always been to end it on our terms, leaving the Valley in the time and place we’ve always imagined,” Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg said in a joint statement regarding the series coming to an end. “So it is with immense pride and thankfulness that we are able to announce that achievement. The upcoming Season Six will mark the conclusion of Cobra Kai. While this may be a bittersweet day for the fandom, the Miyagiverse has never been stronger. This fandom is the BEST on the planet and we hope to be telling more Karate Kid stories with you down the line. Because as we all know, Cobra Kai Never Dies.”
Production on Cobra Kai Season 6 Is Now on Hold Amid Writers Strike
Production on Cobra Kai season six has now been paused amid the ongoing WGA writers strike, with the creators and crew taking to social media to fight for a fair deal. “We hate to strike, but if we must, we strike hard,” co-creator Jon Hurwitz said in a post. “Pencils down in the Cobra Kai writers room. No writers on set. These aren’t fun times, but it’s unfortunately necessary. The moment a fair deal is in place, we’ll get back to kicking ass. In the meantime, sending strength and support to the negotiating committee. You got this.”
While Cobra Kai season six will be the last outing in the main series, the universe is expected to continue, with several spinoffs and other projects now in development.
Starring Ralph Macchio, William Zabka, Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Maridueña, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Jacob Bertrand, Martin Kove, Peyton List, and Thomas Ian Griffith, the first five seasons of Cobra Kai are now available to stream on Netflix.
