Although graduation season has passed and schools have transitioned to summer strength and conditioning workouts, high school coaching positions are still busy being filled across the Coastal Bend.
John Paul II has named former Odem defensive coordinator and girls basketball and track and field coach Roland Ramirez as its athletic director and head football coach. Ramirez spent eight years at Odem and previously coached at South Park.
Carroll will have a new boys basketball coach in 2023-24 as Tramaine Hancock has been handed the reins of the Tigers program. Hancock previously was an assistant coach at Beaumont United which advanced to the Class 6A state tournament the last three seasons and won two championships.
Robstown announced that successful former Bishop softball coach Tito Moreno would lead the Cotton Pickers softball program. Moreno led the Badgers to the 2021 state tournament in Class 3A.
London saw its boys soccer coach Joe Riojas accept the athletic director and head football coaching position in Taft and assistant Jason Braun has been promoted to head coach of the Pirates squad, which made its second regional tournament appearance in three seasons this spring.
New Alice athletic director and head football coach J.R. Castellano announced Hector Gaza will take over the Coyotes boys track program and also become the defensive coordinator for the football team. Gaza was an assistant at San Diego before joining the Alice football staff before last school year. Tinker Villarreal will be the school’s new strength and conditioning coach as well as leading the powerlifting team.
Former Refugio assistant Cam Cox was named the Coyotes new offensive coordinator under Castalleno earlier this spring.

Victor Hernandez has taken over the cross country program at Gregory-Portland after a successful stint at Sinton and Josephine Guzman will now helm the Pirates cross country and girls track teams at Sinton after his departure.
Gregory-Portland will have several new varsity head coaches for the upcoming school year including Brian Allen (tennis), Colton Buzzard (boys track & field) and Brent Swanson (girls powerlifting).
Bradly Chavez returned to Miller in the spring as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator of the school’s football team and will also lead the boys soccer team. Chanta Gidrey will take over as the head volleyball coach for the Bucs.
Kingsville has announced a handful of changes since Ruben Garcia took over as athletic director, coming from Falfurrias. Matt Jones Jr. will lead the boys basketball program after coming from Liberty. Girls basketball will be led by Vince Montgomery and Rueben Flowers will head the Brahmas track program. Both coaches followed Garcia after previous stints at Falfurrias.
Garcia has also brought in former Bishop head coach and Taft assistant Joe Rios as the school’s assistant head coach and offensive coordinator.
The Corpus Christi ISD Athletic Department saw an overhaul of its administration in the spring. Brenda Marshall has brought in a new group of assistant athletic directors including Michael Keel, Kevin Hendrickson and Dee Bernal.
