Celtic made history by clinching their eighth domestic treble after defeating Inverness Caledonian Thistle 3-1 in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden Park on Saturday. This milestone saw Celtic secure the clean sweep of league, League Cup, and Scottish Cup, creating a world record in the process.
The first half of the game was relatively nondescript, but Kyogo Furuhashi put Celtic ahead in the 38th minute with his 34th goal of the season. Inverness created some early opportunities, but they were undone by the Japanese striker’s goal.
Celtic only strengthened their lead in the second half, with Liel Abada scoring their second goal in the 65th minute after coming on as a halftime substitute. While Inverness managed to reduce the deficit five minutes before the end of play with a goal from substitute Dan MacKay, it was only a consolation. Celtic’s Portuguese winger, Jota, sealed the game with a third goal, ensuring that they finished the game with a two-goal advantage.
However, the atmosphere surrounding the final was tense due to the mounting speculation around Tottenham’s interest in Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou. Still, Postecoglou avoided addressing the rumors, saying, “I think I deserve to enjoy this moment just like everyone else. I worked really hard for this moment… There will be a time to come for those kinds of questions, but for now, we’ve grasped a small chunk of history for ourselves and I’m not going to pass that by being sidetracked.”
All in all, Celtic’s victory in the Scottish Cup final allowed them to make history, and they continue to set high standards in their league. As they sealed their eighth domestic treble, they proved themselves to be one of the most successful clubs in Scottish football history.
