The following contains major spoilers for Avengers #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Captain Marvel has redefined what it means to be an Avenger for her brand new team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Avengers #1 by writer Jed MacKay, artist C.F. Villa and colorist Federico Blee finds Captain Marvel gazing down at Earth from the surface of the moon while contemplating what it means to be an Avenger. As she muses on the subject, Carol notes that she and her fellow heroes calling themselves Avengers is a warning for the members of the team rather than their enemies due to the fact that in order “to avenge something, you have to lose it.”
Avengers #1 picks up after the events of writer Jason Aaron’s Multiverse spanning epic, which saw the eponymous heroes team up with countless versions of themselves from throughout the ages and alternate timelines, all in the hopes of dismantling the machinations of Mephisto and his villainous armies. Spanning both the main Avengers title as well as Avengers Forever, the fight against Mephisto’s Council of Red and his Multiversal Masters of Evil introduced both new heroes and villains to the wider Marvel mythos.
Chief among these new additions to the Multiverse is Avenger Prime, a variant of Loki who now stands poised to coordinate an army of multiversal Avengers in repairing the damage done by Mephisto’s plot. While Avenger Prime has taken a prominent position in the God Quarry in the wake of Mephisto’s defeat, the Avengers of the primary Marvel Universe were disbanded, leaving the door open for Carol to lead a new, vastly smaller lineup of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
What Is Marvel’s New Avengers Series About?
Currently, Carol and her team of Avengers are on track to be embroiled in the mystery of Marvel’s Missing Moment, a single point in time that has eluded any answers as to its nature, as well as Kang the Conqueror himself. While details have been scarce regarding what this story will ultimately entail, 2022’s Timeless #1 by writer Jed MacKay and artists Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Patch Zircher and Salvador Larroca was teased by Marvel as a glimpse into “what’s next for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”
Avengers #1 is written by Jed MacKay, with art by C.F. Villa, colors by Federico Blee, design by Carlos Lao and letters by VC’s Cory Petit.
