The following contains major spoilers for Avengers #1, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Captain Marvel has declared Black Panther “the most dangerous man alive.”
Avengers #1 by writer Jed MacKay, artist C.F. Villa, and colorist Federico Blee finds Carol Danvers leading her new team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes into battle against a towering foe, all while looking back on the conversations she had with her teammates upon bringing them back into the fold. When it comes to T’Challa, better known as the Black Panther, Carol openly describes him as the “most dangerous man alive,” not to mention someone who never stopped being an Avenger no matter how far he has fallen.
Carol as Chairperson of the Avengers inviting T’Challa to return to the team in her new lineup comes on the heels of multiple tumultuous events in the lives of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The Avengers themselves have only recently overcome the threat of Mephisto, his Council of Red, and his Multiversal Masters of Evil. In doing so, the previously bloated roster of Avengers disassembled, affording Carol the opportunity to select one of her own.
Black Panther’s Troubles in Wakanda and Beyond
As for the Black Panther, recent months have seen him not only ousted from his previous place as Chairperson of the Avengers, but from his throne as the king of Wakanda, not to mention his place as a citizen of his homeland entirely. These developments came as a result of the discovery of T’Challa’s decades-old sleeper agent program, which saw various Wakandan agents take up residence across the globe in case of any future international incidents. With the fall of the Black Panther came the rise of Jhai, T’Challa’s best friend and sleeper agent who had faked his own death in order to amass an army of violent zealots dedicated to seeing their former king return to his throne.
Currently, the Avengers are slated to take center stage in the hunt for Marvel’s Missing Moment, a single second in time that has somehow eluded Kang the Conqueror’s grasp. The Missing Moment was first cataloged in 2022’s Timeless #1, in which Kang became acutely aware of both its importance and seemingly impossible nature. The issue was also described by Marvel as a glimpse at “what’s next for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”
