Officers from around the Capricornia District have signed up and are ready to take on the Push Up Challenge throughout June.
Between June 1 and 23, the challenge is to do 3,144 push ups (the number of people who died by suicide in 2021) to raise awareness for mental health.
The total amount of push ups is per participant, and the target varies each day however, participants don’t have to do solely push ups but can tailor other exercises such as squats and sit-ups.
Acting Sergeant Dominic Martin from the Capricornia Crime Prevention Unit is the team leader for the Capricornia District Team, which includes officers from multiple stations around the Capricornia District including Gladstone, North Rockhampton, Rockhampton & Calliope.
“I’ve seen how poor mental health affects people of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds,” said Acting Sergeant Martin.
“It’s important to me to raise awareness and for people to talk about and break the stigma around mental health and to seek assistance when they need it.
“I’ll be actively trying to get photos and videos of myself and other officers throughout the period of June, doing push ups in a variety of locations.
“Our main beneficiary is Lifeline, with all funds raised going towards this incredibly important support service.”
The overall goal of the QPS is to raise $10,000 with teams competing exactly the same as they did in Movember, except not as many moustaches.
