Corowa Lions Club members have been at the forefront of this project, with dedicated individuals like Herman Fransen, Barry Barker, James O’Donovan, and Lynn Fredericks working tirelessly to collect cans and bottles from over 40 local businesses and private residences.
These establishments and households contribute their empty cans, stubbies, and other 10-cent redeemable containers, recognising the importance of supporting cancer and medical research.
In addition to Corowa, the initiative has expanded its reach thanks to the efforts of Wodonga Lions Club member Paul Shortis.
Paul has been collecting cans from businesses in the Wodonga and Yackandandah areas, while Herman and his team cover Corowa, Wahgunyah, Rutherglen, Wangaratta, and even further afield.
One notable supporter of the project is Rodger King, owner of the Greta Road Tavern and Bottle-shop in Wangaratta. Mr King and his staff have played a significant role in aiding the cause, demonstrating their commitment to making a difference in the fight against cancer.
To streamline the collection process and reduce transportation costs, Paul Shortis now redeems all 10-cent refundable containers for the Wodonga Lions Club cans at the Lavington recycle centre. Similarly, D&M Recycling in Corowa processes the collections from the Corowa district, ensuring that every contribution counts.
Moving forward, the funds raised through the Can Collection Project will be directly deposited into the activities accounts of the Corowa and Wodonga Lions clubs. From there, the funds will be allocated to the Lions Children’s Cancer Research Foundation and other essential Lions cancer and medical research projects.
The Corowa and Wodonga Lions Clubs express their deep gratitude to the community members who have actively supported the project. They also extend a warm welcome to anyone who wishes to join them in this worthy cause.
