All you need to know about Cannes 2023 ahead of the big day
After a slow couple of years, owing to the pandemic, Cannes Film Festival made a comeback in 2022, so it goes saying that all eyes are on the French Riviera this year. Here’s checking out a few highlights we have been looking forward to:
Johnny Depp’s BIG comeback
The 76th edition of the festival will be kick-starting on May 16 aka Tuesday, with Jeanne du Barry, a historical drama by Maïwenn starring Johnny Depp premiering at the Riviera. This marks Johnny’s big comeback on the screens after taking a step back from acting following his very public tiff with ex-wife Amber Heard.
Cannes 2023 headliners
Cannes attendees are in for a wild treat as two of the most iconic filmmakers of this generation, Martin Scorsese and James Mangold are all set to premiere their work at the film festival. Martin Scorses will be showcasing Osage Nation 1920s epic Killers of the Flower Moon with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, while James Mangold will premiere Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, featuring Harrison Ford for the last time before he bids adieu to the character.
Female Filmmakers at Cannes
in 2023, 21 films will be competing for the coveted Palme d’Or. The final verdict will be decided by the jury led by last year’s winner, Swedish writer-director Ruben Östlund. Notably, seven of these films are directed by women. And yep, that’s a new high for Cannes in its eight decades of history. Specifically, Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera is widely anticipated among film circles.
A-listers on the red carpet
Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons are all set to grace the red carpet with their presence. Apart from them, father-daughter duo Johnny Depp and Lily-Rose Depp will also be marking their attendance with Johnny for his comeback film and Lily for The Weeknd directed The Idol.
