Explore the Xmas in July Festival
With free entry, this French-inspired food, wine, and winter market is a must-do. Enjoy real Christmas trees and dazzling lights as you stroll through the snow lane where flakes will drizzle on you from above, window shop the stalls filled with arts, crafts, and more from local producers, and (if your budget allows it) treat yourself to some winter comfort food—like a glass of mulled wine.

Keep warm at our National institutions
With so many museums and galleries on our doorstep, sometimes it’s easy to forget how lucky we are to have amazing exhibitions at our fingertips. This winter, why not stay warm by exploring the best of Canberra’s culture—there’s always something free happening somewhere. Here’s our list of exhibitions you need to explore this winter (but don’t forget about other institutions like the National Film and Sound Archive, the Australian War Memorial, and the Canberra Glassworks)!
Spend a cosy day at your local library
Love books but can’t justify spending the money to keep up with your reading habits? Head to your local library for a cosy day inside—you might just discover a new literary obsession where you least expect it. The best part is it’s free to sign-up!
Have a winter-ful time at the local markets
There’s something about heading to the markets in winter. From looking at seasonal produce to losing yourself in the creations of local artisans, there’s always plenty to see and if you do decide to make a purchase you know that the money is going to some very deserving locals!
We suggest spending Sunday morning exploring the Haig Park Village Markets before hitting the stalls of the Old Bus Depot Markers and sneaking in a walk around the foreshore (if you’re willing to brave the cold).
Embrace the chill at Corin Forest
It’s not winter in Canberra until your journey to Corin Forrest for an alpine adventure. While you do need to pay to take part in the activities (which include the alpine slide, Snowplay, lessons, and skiing), entry to Corin Forest is free and if you’re on a bit of a budget snuggling up on the viewing decks besides the Snowplay area and Ski Hill with a hot coffee or nibbling on some woodfire pizza is a great way to spend a day.
