- Fire and hazmat teams rushed to the Bunnings on Thursday night
- One woman is in hospital after inhaling fumes
A woman is being treated in hospital for breathing difficulties following a chemical spill at a Bunnings store in Sydney.
Firefighters and a hazardous materials crew rushed to the store at Balgowlah in the city’s north early on Thursday night after reports a truck carrying a chemical shipment was leaking.
It’s understood the spill, which happened about 6pm, has been contained but the semi-trailer laden with pallets of chemicals including acids, chlorine and aerosols needs to be unloaded before it can be cleaned.
NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry told Daily Mail Australia the rear of the truck carrying the hazardous chemicals was discovered to be leaking.
‘Eight fire trucks with a hazmat team are on the scene unloading the truck to determine the extent of the leak,’ he said.
‘They will find the leaking drum and render it safe.’
He said the spill is believed to be sodium hydrochloride – otherwise known as chlorine for swimming pools.
He also confirmed a woman was treated at the scene for breathing difficulties and she has been taken to hospital.
Bunnings has been contacted for comment.
It’s the second commotion in weeks for the Balgowlah Bunnings.
Just last month, famous UK pop icon Sir Rod Stewart was spotted perusing the aisles while in Sydney for a concert, much to the delight of staff and customers.
