A Brunswick Junction institution is set to compete in a high-steaks competition later this month for mouth-watering glory.
The Brunswick Tavern was announced as a country finalist for the 2023 Australian Hoteliers Association and Little Creatures WA Best Steak Sandwich Competition.
Owner Mark McKay said it was good the venue had made it to the finals.
“A lot of it reflects what the people in the kitchen are doing,” he said.
“Terease (Francis) in the kitchen does a great job and it has sort of been perfected over the last three or four years and it obviously shows.”
The pub’s offering is made up of toasted turkish bread with a 150g sirloin, melted cheese, tomato, caramelised onions, lettuce and dressings.
When asked what the secret is behind the sandwich, Mr McKay said there was nothing too special about it.
“It’s not real flash, it’s just basic, but it’s all fresh food and good local produce,” he said.
The steak sandwich is a popular item at the Brunswick Tavern, with Mr McKay estimating it accounts for about 30 per cent of all food sales.
“They just go out the door,” he said.
AHA WA chief executive Bradley Woods said the competition had grown significantly since last year.
“To put the community interest in this competition in perspective, more people voted in the 2023 WA’s Best Steak Sandwich Competition than the populations of Margaret River, Denmark, and Dunsborough combined,” he said.
The tavern will have some stiff competition, with Karratha’s North West Brewing Company set to fight for back-to-back titles.
They will be joined in the country contest by Kalgoorlie’s The Miners Rest and The Duke Inn in Northam.
The regional winner will be crowned following a live cook off at the AHA Hospitality Expo at Crown Perth on June 27.
