New Iberia police confirm a body was found in the freezer of an Arby’s restaurant Thursday evening (May 11).
UPDATE:
A spokesperson for the New Iberia Police Department has confirmed that the person found in the freezer of an Arby’s restaurant was an employee at the establishment. Early on, rumors swirled that a manager was found in the freezer, and while we can’t confirm the rank or position, we do know the deceased was employed by Arby’s.
The restaurant issued the following statement to our media partners at KATC.
The restaurant released the following statement: We are aware of the incident that took place at our franchised location in New Iberia, LA. The franchisee is cooperating fully with local authorities as they conduct their investigation. Due to this being an active investigation, we defer any further comment to the police department.
The investigation is ongoing.
According to Sgt. Daesha Hughes with the New Iberia Police Department, officers responded to the Arby’s on Admiral Doyle Drive around 6:20 p.m. on Thursday evening in response to reports of “a deceased person.”
Multiple eyewitnesses reported a large police presence around the fast food business with Facebook user Lonniesha Pomier posting a photo outside of the restaurant claiming that a body was found in the freezer.
Her post has been shared over 1,000 times as other eyewitnesses echoed Pomier’s claims in the comments.
Our media partners at KATC confirmed those eyewitness reports via a tweet from Jim Hummel who said employees made the discovery just before 6:30 p.m.
This is a developing story and police are currently investigating the incident as what they described as a “suspicious” death.
We will update this story when more information is made available.
