Thunderstorms battered Birmingham on Sunday after the country experienced its warmest days of the year this weekend – and more turbulent weather could soon be on the way. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of the UK, including Birmingham, from 12pm to 9pm on Monday, June 12.
A flood alert is also in place in Bournville due to rising river levels. The alert reads: “River levels have risen at the Bournville Woodbrook Road river gauge as a result of localised thunderstorms.
“Consequently, flooding of property possible from 9pm today, June 11. Flooding is affecting properties around Bond Street Birmingham.
“There is uncertainty, over the amount of rainfall expected and the exact location and timing of future thunderstorms.”
In the last couple of days, a dedicated lightning map has picked up dozens of strikes across the Black Country and Birmingham. Worcestershire seems to have had the most incidents in the region, with a tree bringing down a power line in the county.
West Midlands Fire Service fire control said it received over 50 calls outs in relation to the weather overnight. Residents in Tamworth described the storm as ‘the worst ever’ with a number of properties struck by lightning.
