THE women of the Blue Lake Golf Club enjoyed a combined competition last week, with a stroke round for the May monthly medal, the fourth and final round of the Captain’s Trophy and the first round of the state-run International Bowl.
The chilly start did not deter the 27 women taking part, with the sun peaking through the clouds by mid-morning.
Rosemary Martland claimed the monthly medal, her second for the year, with a fine nett 69, one of only two to play to or under their handicap.
Martland also took home the first prize voucher for division 1’s top scorer, signing for 84/15/69.
That included seven pars and only two double-bogeys, with a little trouble on the par 4 seventh and 18th holes, but consistent nines of 43/41.
The course set-up for the monthly medal with strategically placed pins on most holes certainly created a challenge for most, but a bonus was the firmness of the fairways still giving lots of run.
Runner-up Kate Hommelhoff signed for 104/26/78 after having a slow 55 on the outward nine, with too much red ink.
However, she was able to stem the rot on the inward nine for 49, with pars on the 10th and 12th holes, plus a birdie on the dog-leg 15th.
Third place went to Dianne Perryman (100/21/79) after a count-back from Karen Panagopoulos (104/26/79).
In Division 2 Lynn Annand has been in the winner’s circle recently and was pleased to play to her handicap, posting 105/33/72 and only 29 putts, with the flat stick working a treat and two consistent nines of 53/52.
Bev Pascoe 108/32/76 was runner-up, also with a bit too much red ink on her card with splits of 56/52, but enough to win her a voucher.
Third went to Dianne Allen (114/37/77), who also won the pro-shot on the downhill par 3 fifth hole and finished with a par.
Nearest the pin second shot winner’s on the 14th hole were Josie Ashby in Division 1 and Rose Case in Division 2.
Ashby won her division’s putting prize with 26 putts.
Novelty prizes won by Panagopoulos and Hommelhoff on the 14 and 15th for birdies, the latter’s from a chip-in ferret.
Others to have chip-in ferrets were Lynda Nannings and Trudy Herbert on the 10th hole, Ashby on the 12th and Pascoe the 18th.
Tomorrow’s competition is the second round of the short course trophy in stableford format.
Meanwhile on Saturday in better weather than was expected, 13 women competed in the fifth and final round of the Jetts Fitness Mount Gambier Summer Trophy in stroke format. Lynn Annand claimed the win with a score of 106/33/73, with her prize a sleeve of golf balls and the Blue Lake Golf Club voucher, as well as a prize donated by Jetts Fitness. Annand had a par on the 12th hole, with splits of 55/51.
Rosemary Martland’s 90/14/76 was good enough for second place and included pars on the 14th and 16th par 3s, but unfortunately double-bogeys on the sixth, seventh and 11th.
Martland faced a count-back from Helen Stratford (95/19/76) in third and Josie Ashby (99/23/76) fourth.
Stratford won the pro-shot and Hommelhoff won the long drive.
