An unexpected crossover paints Berserk’s Guts and Griffith in the same vein as Barbie and Ken.
A fan of Kentaro Muira’s Berserk, Aki, recently shared artwork to their Twitter account that parodied the promotional material for Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie. The illustration shows Guts and Griffith, the central characters from the dark fantasy series, receiving mugshots after being arrested. The characters pose precisely like Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken do in the promotional material, with Guts paying Barbie and Griffith matching Ken.
Guts and Griffith Embrace Their Roles as Barbie and Ken
The picture shows Guts on the left with a concerned and alarmed look. Guts stares directly at the camera while holding a sign with his name and a reference to Midland, where the manga takes place, printed on it. On the right is Griffith, who is far more nonchalant, posing for the camera with a wink and a smile. His energy is the opposite of Guts and fully reflects the pose Gosling’s Ken shows in the original.
Guts and Griffith play the beloved Berserk series’ protagonist and antagonist, respectively. The former is a lone swordsman who wanders Midland searching for battlefields to earn a living on. However, this changes after he meets the latter, a charismatic man named Griffith, who recruits him into his mercenary group known as The Band of the Hawk. From there, the series delves into a long-spanning story with multiple sagas, genres and iconic moments. It is a property that receives a large amount of fan art, including images of Guts in classic paintings and even Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom fans recreating it in the game.
The comments on the post were full of commendation for the artwork, with users loving the parody piece. One person asked why the characters had been arrested, and the artist replied, “Killing Lord Julius and his son maybe,” about a scene from the manga’s “Golden Age” arc. Others praised the art “Amazing” or delivered phrases like, “Please, this is so funny.” Some also referenced Guts’ iconic “Griffith!” scream.
Berserk was created by Kentaro Miura, who died in 2021 before getting the chance to finish the series. The artist’s close friend Kouji Mori took over after his passing and worked alongside Miura’s old editing team to continue the saga.
The Barbie movie will premiere on July 21, 2023. In addition, Berserk’s next chapter is scheduled to debut on May 26, 2023.
