Two of the Avengers‘ biggest stars just unveiled all-new looks, and the updated costumes could give the iconic MCU duo of Vision and Scarlet Witch their most striking makeover yet. In celebration of the third annual Hellfire Gala, the extravagant in-universe party hosted by the X-Men on their home island of Krakoa, Marvel is continuing their tradition of redesigning their most iconic heroes. This year, fan favorites Vision and the Scarlet Witch are among those receiving updated costumes recently revealed by Marvel.
The Hellfire Gala is the annual event held by the X-Men to celebrate their accomplishments as an independent mutant nation with their non-mutant friends and allies, has evolved into one of Marvel’s biggest events of the years since its inception in 2021. To promote the event, some of the comics industry’s most celebrated artists have reinvented Marvel’s most recognizable characters on Hellfire Gala-themed variant covers set to release throughout the month of July. Perhaps unsurprising given their meteoric rise in popularity following their portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Vision and the Scarlet Witch are among those characters with updated Hellfire Gala looks that recognize the veteran Avengers and their history with the X-Men.
Vision and Scarlet Witch’s Hellfire Gala Costumes Honor Their Avengers Legacy Ahead of New Era
Appearing on the variant cover of Avengers #3 by Jed MacKay and Carlos Villa, artist David Baldeón’s new look for Vision lauds Krakoa’s tropical landscape that’s been a focal point of the X-Men’s stories since the founding of the nation. The redesign for Vision stays true to his classic color scheme with a green and yellow robe, along with an accessorized headpiece in the shape of Vision’s solar gem that gives the Android Avenger his powers. Alternatively, Scarlet Witch’s makeover by Dustin Nguyen set to cover Doctor Strange #5, also by MacKay and with art by Pasqual Ferry, shows a blank page only filled by a stylized interpretation of Scarlet Witch in a red and black gown and watercolor accents symbolizing her hair behind her iconic red tiara. While the covers could hardly be any more different, their presence at this year’s Hellfire Gala could likely set the two up for their upcoming projects and reunite the currently estranged couple.
In fact, the famous pair has been primarily separated since Brian Michael Bendis’ “Avengers: Disassembled” storyline in 2005. Despite being so closely associated with each other by the reputation of their popular marriage, both characters have spent much of the last two decades involved with others, including Scarlet Witch’s relationship with fellow sorcerer Brother Voodoo in the current continuity. However, the upcoming relaunch of The Avengers by Jed MacKay and C.F. Villa plans to reunite the two on one team, and the popularity of Vision and Scarlet Witch’s relationship in multimedia could finally reconcile one of the most notable relationships in Avengers history.
The 2023 Hellfire Gala has promised to be one of the most consequential comics of the year. Scarlet Witch has been closely associated with the event since her death and subsequent resurrection after the events of the 2021 Gala. With Jed MacKay’s new Avengers series alongside the “Fall of X” era of the X-Men both gearing up this summer, Vision, the Scarlet Witch, their Avengers teammates, and the X-Men all have an exciting new era of comics ahead of them.
