Piper Duck, a versatile athlete from Wagga Wagga and Tumut, exhibited interests in various sports during her upbringing. Standing at five-foot-six, Duck initially gravitated towards basketball. However, when rugby sevens was introduced in the 2016 Summer Olympics, her focus shifted.
During the Olympics, Duck’s attention was captured by the performances of Sharni Williams and Eli Green on television. Intrigued, Duck questioned her mother about the sport, expressing her desire to play tackle footy. Inspired by the introduction of rugby sevens as an Olympic sport, Duck decided to give it a try.
In her first rugby tournament, Duck had the chance to meet Sharni Williams, who proudly showed off her gold medal from the Rio Olympics. This encounter left a lasting impression on Duck, who enthusiastically embraced the sport.
Although Duck still had an interest in basketball, her dedication to rugby grew stronger when Ellia Green wrote her a persuasive letter. Green, aware of Duck’s hesitation, encouraged her to fully commit to rugby sevens. This heartfelt note, which Duck treasured dearly, motivated her to dive headfirst into the world of rugby.
Fast forward to the present, and Duck now serves as the captain of the Wallaroos, the Australian women’s rugby team. Her journey has been a rapid one, considering she started relatively late. After making her debut for the Waratahs in 2020, Duck earned her first Wallaroos cap just two years later. To date, she has played in 10 international matches.
Duck’s leadership skills will be put to the test on June 29, as she is expected to lead the Wallaroos in their first match against New Zealand in the Pacific Four series, which also includes Canada and the United States.
