The Aussie Racing Cars Super Series has announced it will retain the high aero kits for the remaining rounds of the 2023 season.
The racing so far has been an improved product this season, with the high aero wing at the back having been properly on show at the Queensland Raceway last month.
The new aerodynamic kit was initially for use at circuits like Mount Panorama and Phillip Island, but the resultant product and feedback from drivers has led the category to make it permanent.
The changes include a proper aerofoil wing to replace what used to be a purely aesthetic one, and a larger front splitter and undertray.
The extra grip provided by the new aero kits has seen some high quality and close racing in the 2023 Aussie Racing Cars season
Category Manager Brad Ward explains the process behind making the kits a permanent mainstay.
“Every year I try to mix things up, and this season I decided to put the high aerodynamics kits on the cars at all the events in the hope it would promote better racing, which has been a success so far,” he explained.
“The rear wing was a symmetrical foil, so it was just there for looks and the front splitter wasn’t very big without an undertray on it.
“Going to Bathurst was when we decided to develop a proper aerodynamic package for the cars, which is where an upgraded foil for the rear wing and a splitter with an undertray came up.
“A by-product of the drag created was the slipstreaming opportunities improved and the pack racing was better, which ensured that the racing was closer.
Series leader Joel Heinrich heads into Tassie with the pack close behind him, in a top-ten split by just 35 points.
The long straights at the Queensland Raceway was where the aero charges really shone through, with the quality close racing up front an indication of what’s to come.
“The racing at Queensland Raceway was mega. There were 12 cars in the front pack, it was huge.
“If you look at the events we’re doing this year it made a lot of sense; Queensland Raceway, Symmons Plains, Hidden Valley, Townsville and Highlands are all circuits featuring long straights or fast bits, so it made sense to run the package for the whole year.
“Everyone loves it and enjoys the extra grip levels the package is providing.”
The Aussie Racing Cars Super Series returns to the Supercars Championship support bill this weekend in Tasmania where the action begins on Friday ahead of four races.
Osborn’s Transport driver Joel Heinrich leads the series by seven-points ahead of Team CoolDrive-supported duo Josh Anderson and Reece Chapman.
