Southerners Sporting Club members will go down an icy cold slide to raise funds for the second edition of their Fight MND — motor neuron disease — fundraiser on June 17.
Club co-president Shannon Foulds told the Kalgoorlie Miner the Hopetoun club was excited to hold the Big Freeze event again, as they felt there were benefiting the community.
“We’ve had many members of the club and associations in our area mention how much they appreciated our club doing this and raising funds for this cause because lots of them have come forward and said that they know at least one person with the disease,” she said.
“So it’s nice to know that we’re doing something beneficial.”
Ms Foulds said they had hired a waterslide from a party-hire company in Esperance, and the ice was donated by Hopetoun Ice Works.
“We have three clubs in our association so we are calling for nominations from the three clubs to see who will go down the slide. So we’re asking a minimum of three from each club and then we are obviously putting it out to the general public and our community to see if there’s any other people that would like to go down,” she said.
The nominees with the most votes will be lucky enough to go down the slide at dusk while dressed in costumes.
“We want to make it quite amusing and entertaining event, have a bit of a laugh,” Ms Foulds said.
She said the event would be held at the football oval on their sports grounds after their football game.
“Unfortunately, for the people going on the slide, it is quite a cold time of the day, it’s getting really cold in so we definitely need to make sure we got the hot shower ready afterwards,” Ms Foulds said.
With 10,000 raised at last year’s event, she said she was hoping to match the record.
“We’ve had a lot of great feedback already people that are saying that they’re coming down for it from other towns . . . we’ll have our bar open later on and parmi nights happening in the club rooms afterwards,” Ms Foulds said.
She said the community was also invited to make donations which would be auctioned off throughout the day to raise more funds.
