The MidCoast Film Fest is back for another weekend of original films! This season we decided to take a new approach to our programming and focus on celebrating New England. New England films, New England places, and New England filmmakers. We are excited to share these original works with you, created by our friends and neighbors from Newcastle to Nobleboro and beyond. Join us in welcoming incredible filmmakers as they share their work on one of the largest screens in the state of Maine.
You Hurt My Feelings (R; 1 hour, 33 minutes): Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), a popular writer, and her husband Don, a well-liked teacher, share the kind of relationship that truly, seriously, for the love of God cannot be real: that is, they’re actually in love. But when Beth discovers that Don has been untruthful to her about his opinion of her work for years — Beth’s world comes crashing down. Has their whole relationship been one Big Fat Lie? Final showtimes Thursday, June 22 at 2 and 7 p.m. Presented in partnership with The Kingfisher and The Queen.
2023 MidCoast Film Festival – Celebrating New England: Friday, June 23 at 7 p.m. we kick off this year’s festival with feature documentary: “Stafford.” This film invites viewers to visit this special place and spend time with some of its people as they look back on the history of their town and turn an eye toward its uncertain future. Filmmakers Katy E. Cecchetti and Kevin P Corcoran (Portland, Maine) will be with us for a post-screening talkback. And on Saturday, June 24, join us all day for four different programs, featuring 17 films, and the chance to talk with guest filmmakers following every program! Saturday begins with our Double Feature program: “On The Waterfront,” playing at 11 a.m. The Maine Narrative Shorts Program, is playing at 1 p.m. The Locals Only Shorts Program, is playing at 3 p.m. And closing out the festival, the ever popular New England Based Stories Shorts Program, is playing at 6 p.m. For more information, and to purchase advance passes and tickets, visit us online. Free—Shrek (PG; 1 hour, 30 minutes): In conjunction with Skidompha Library and the 2023 summer reading program – All Together Now – we invite you to this free family friendly event. We encourage you to arrive early and color a giant poster which will be in the lobby available for anyone who wishes to take part. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. Once upon a time, in a far away swamp, there lived an ogre named Shrek (Mike Myers) whose precious solitude is suddenly shattered by an invasion of annoying fairy tale characters. They were all banished from their kingdom by the evil Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow). Determined to save their home — not to mention his — Shrek cuts a deal with Farquaad and sets out to rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) to be Farquaad’s bride. Rescuing the Princess may be small compared to her deep, dark secret. Playing Sunday, June 25 at 2 p.m.
Master Gardener (R; 1 hour, 47 minutes): Directed by Academy Award nominee, Paul Schrader and based on his original screenplay. Narvel Roth (award-winner Joel Edgerton), the meticulous horticulturist of Gracewood Gardens, is as much devoted to tending the grounds of this beautiful and historic estate, as to pandering his employer, the wealthy dowager Mrs. Haverhill (three-time Academy Award nominee Sigourney Weaver). When Mrs. Haverhill demands that he take on her wayward and troubled great-niece Maya (Quintessa Swindell) as a new apprentice, chaos enters Narvel’s spartan existence, unlocking dark secrets from a buried violent past that threaten them all. Playing Sunday, Jun 25 at 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 28 at 2 and 7 p.m., and Thursday, June 29 at 2 p.m.. Presented in partnership with Horch Roofing.
