Arundel Castle, one of Sussex’s most popular and picturesque castles, will be hosting a Medieval Festival Weekend this summer for visitors and locals. Set to take place next month (July 8 and July 9), the festival will “transport visitors” back to 1474, allowing them to immerse themselves in history like never before.
Fun for all the family, the two-day event will have enough entertainment to keep everyone happy, whether that be having a go at one of the many activities, watching demonstrations or the Knights Tournament! Among the activities to partake in will be axe throwing, crossbows and archery.
With the time period being set in the year where the Earl of Arundel marked the birth of his first grandson with a knight’s foot tournament and an archery contest between three nations – England, France, and Poland – the festival will encapsulate this and many other events and aspects that would have formed life back then. On the lower lawns of the castle, prepare to be time-warped back in time as you explore history like never before.

As well as activities to actively engage in, demonstrations can be watched that will show visitors activities such as forging, cooking, and leatherwork. Combat demonstrations and falconry demonstrations will also be worth seeing too!
To keep the children entertained, parents can also watch them take part in the castle’s renowned “kids battles”, as well as spend time with them enjoying medieval music from performers Myal and Peg. A storytelling session will also be held to keep younger people entertained.
With so much to see and do, the event will also offer a range of food with a “medieval twist” as well as drinks nearby. If this doesn’t take the fancy of visitors, visitors are welcome to bring their own picnic onsite or visit the castle’s café, restaurant or tea terrace.
Just a month away, castle manager Andrew Lewis said: “We’re thrilled to host the Medieval Festival. It’s a unique opportunity for visitors of all ages to come together and experience the sights, sounds, and excitement of medieval times with the unique and historical backdrop of Arundel Castle.”
Tickets can be booked online on the castle website and cost £25 per adult, £11 per child of £61 per family ticket. Children under five will be able to enter the festival for free.
