The Atlantic Center for the Arts is hosting its next Artists-in-Residence program, Residency #189, from May 14 to June 3 in New Smyrna Beach. The program will feature Mentoring Artists Sky Hopinka, Rone Shavers, and Nina C. Young, along with 18 Associate Artists from across the United States. During the three-week stay, the Associate Artists will work with the Mentoring Artists in group meetings, workshops, and other activities to expand their work. The program is sponsored by various organizations and foundations, including The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. The residency will also feature Mentoring Artist Talks and a closing reception showcasing new works by the Associate Artists. The next residency, Residency #190, will take place from June 25 to July 15 and will focus on contemporary storytelling.
The Atlantic Center for the Arts is gearing up for its next Artists-in-Residence program, Residency #189, which will take place from May 14 to June 3 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. This program will include mentoring artists Sky Hopinka, a visual artist/filmmaker; Rone Shavers, a fiction writer; and Nina C. Young, a composer, as well as 18 associate artists from across the United States.
During the three-week residency, the associate artists will work closely with the mentoring artists in group meetings, workshops, casual conversations, and other activities to expand their work. The program is sponsored, in part, through the generous support of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; the State of Florida Department of State, Division of Arts and Culture; the Florida Council on Arts and Culture, National Endowment for the Arts, Pabst Steinmetz Foundation; TD Charitable Foundation, Volusia County, and Legacy Campaign donors.
The mentoring artists will also be giving talks throughout the program. Rone Shavers will give a Mentoring Artist Talk from 5 to 6 p.m. on May 22 at the Winter Park Library, while Sky Hopinka will give a Mentoring Artist Talk from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. on May 25 at Daytona State College’s Madorsky Theater. Nina C. Young will give a Mentoring Artist Talk from 5 to 6 p.m. on May 30, also at Daytona State College’s Madorsky Theater. All presentations will be followed by a question and answer session which is free and open to all.
The program will culminate in the INsideOUT closing reception, which will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on June 1 at the Atlantic Center for the Arts main campus, Joan James Harris Theater, 1414 Art Center Avenue, New Smyrna Beach. This reception will feature presentations of new work and works in-progress by the associate artists-in-residence (mature content present).
Looking ahead, the Atlantic Center for the Arts has also announced its remaining 2023 Mentoring Artists-in-Residence Roster. Residency #190, which will take place from June 25 to July 15, will be a themed residency called Forums for Storytelling. This experience is designed to unfurl the power of overlapping ideas, abstraction, the body, and materiality as forums for contemporary storytelling. Visual artist Alteronce Gumby, whose work has been exhibited at galleries such as Hauser & Wirth, Gladstone Gallery, and Camden Arts Centre, will serve as the mentoring artist for this residency.
