MARQUETTE — Manistique picked up a pair of solid runner-up finishes while Gwinn finished in fifth place twice at the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 2 regional track and field meet held at the Emeralds’ field on Friday.
Meanwhile, two days earlier on Wednesday, Superior Central picked up second- and third-place finishes and Republic-Michigamme fifth- and sixth-place finishes at the U.P. Division 3 regional held at Rapid River.

Emeralds second in D-2
On Friday in Manistique, the Emeralds’ Leah Goudreau accounted for three victories in the girls meet as she won the 800-meter run and ran legs on Manistique’s victorious 400 and 1,600 relays.
Bark River-Harris carted off the girls team title with 59 points, followed closely by Manistique with 50, then St. Ignace 33, Pickford 30 and Gwinn 15.
Teammate Danielle Lund accounted for the Emeralds’ other individual event victory when she won the shot put as she also ran with 1,600 relay winners.
And Manistique’s Emma Jones and Kelsey Muth each ran on the winning 400 and 1,600 relays as their team won three relays in all — the 400, 1,600 and 3,200.
Also running on the 400 relay was Brianna Akers, while the 3,200 relay was made up of the Emeralds’ Maya Carlson, Clara Cunningham, Sarah McDaniel and Kyra Carlson.
Gwinn had one winner in Lena Pleaugh in the 300 low hurdles, while she was also second in the 100 hurdles.
In the boys meet, Pickford was the big winner with 69 points as the Emeralds were runners-up with 43. BR-H had 37, St. Ignace 36 and Gwinn 2.
Wyatt Demers accounted for both of Manistique’s individual wins in that meet as he was triumphant in the 100 and 200.
Meanwhile, the Emeralds’ 3,200 relay also came up victorious with the quartet of Brenden Mead, Ben Gilroy, Carter LaVigne and Grant Mason.
In addition, the home team had a number of runner-up finishes as Gilroy was second in both the 1,600 and 3,200, Mason in the 400, Mead in the 800 and Lino Hery in the discus.
Gwinn’s U.P. Finals qualifiers were Thomas Jenkins in the 3,200 and its 3,200 relay team, both finishing fourth.

Superior Central, Republic-Michigamme qualify athletes in Division 3
On Wednesday in Rapid River, Superior Central had solid finishes in both meets, while Republic-Michigamme scored exactly 10 points in each meet.
Engadine won the girls meet with 65 points as SC was a distant second with 38. Rapid River was third with 32, followed by Big Bay de Noc with 15, Mid Peninsula 11, R-M 10 and Escanaba Holy Name 2.
For the boys, the host Rockets carted off the team trophy with 66 points as Engadine was second with 37 and the Cougars third with 35. Holy Name was next with 16, R-M had 10, BBdN 4 and Mid Pen 2.
SC’s Riley Moore starred for area teams in the girls meet, winning both the shot put and long jump, while teammate Madison Begovac won the 300 hurdles and was second in the long jump.
In addition, the Cougars were second in the 1,600 relay and Hannah Vaverka runner-up in the 100.
For R-M, Olivia Mattila was second in the 100 hurdles and Zoe Blubaugh the same in the 1,600.
In the boys meet, SC’s Lucas Swetich had a big day, winning two events and finishing runner-up in two more. He took the 100 and 200 and was second in the 110 hurdles and long jump.
Teammate Wyatt Kulik had a first and a second, winning the 400 and finishing second to Swetich in the 100.
In addition, the Cougars were runners-up in the 800 and 1,600 relays.
R-M’s John Wheeler finished in second place two times in the 1,600 and high jump.
