ALBANY — A convulsion of violence left another child shot and wounded in the city late Saturday.
Police said a 7-year-old boy was struck in the hand and a 37-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the back at 10:30 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Second and Ontario streets. Neither injury is considered life-threatening.
The man and the child were part of a group gathered outside when the suspect fired rounds toward the crowd, police said.
The shooting happened just hours after someone opened fire on the Village Barber and Beauty at 221 Second Ave., killing a 47-year-old man and wounding a 9-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man. So far, no arrests have been made in that case and police have not released the name of the homicide victim. It appears a suspect fired rounds from the outside of the shop into the corner building, hitting the three inside, police said.
No arrests were reported Sunday in the shootings of the 7-year-old or the man.
That child’s shooting was followed by another shooting in Albany that police said occurred before midnight.
Police were called to Livingston Avenue and Ten Broeck Street at 11:50 p.m. to investigate reports of shots fired. Once they arrived on the scene, officers determined the shots were fired nearby at First and North Swan streets.
At around the same time, a 32-year-old man and a 35-year-old man arrived at Albany Medical Center where they were treated for gunshot wounds inflicted in the gunfire at First and Swan. One man was shot in the leg, the other was shot in the torso. Police said the injuries are not life-threatening.
Officer Steve Smith, a spokesman for the police department, said it was unclear if Saturday’s shootings are related.
The children shot Saturday aren’t the only youths to face violence in the city this year.
On April 11, a 3-year-old girl was shot on Colonie Street. No arrests have been made in her case.
At the time, police said they received conflicting reports about where the shooting occurred. The girl survived her injuries.
On Friday, a 41-year-old woman was charged with murder after she stabbed a man to death at the South Mall Towers, 101 S. Pearl St.
Police said they found 58-year-old James West in an eighth-floor hallway with a stab wound to his neck. West died at the scene.
Police said their investigation linked West’s stabbing to Kyisha Smith. The two knew each other, and the stabbing occurred during a what police described as a domestic-related altercation inside of the building. West was found by officers.
Kyisha Smith was scheduled to be arraigned Sunday morning in city court.
