Connections of Mynumerouno have grabbed a lifeline for their talented sprinter’s racing career and sent the horse to America to continue racing.
A winner of five of his nine starts under the care of Nick Ryan, Mynumerouno was banned from racing in Australia after bleeding from both nostrils for a second time at Bendigo in early April.
Mynumerouno flew out earlier this month via Hong Kong and is currently in quarantine in Chicago before he will reach his final destination in Santa Anita under new trainer Paddy Gallagher.
Connections had initially planned for the horse to be retrained as a polo pony until Mark Dodemaide from Woodside Park – which stands Mynumerouno’s stallion Vancouver – made contact and suggested the horse race on under Gallagher.
“I was able to spend an hour or so on the phone with Paddy getting comfortable with my concerns around horse welfare,” managing owner Mark Schiavello said.
“You hear all these horror stories about US racing.
“Nick thought he was a weapon and his last start before bleeding where he was unlucky to Midwest was probably one of his better runs, which said to me he is still a good horse.
“We obviously didn’t make the decision lightly but it’s exciting at the same time.”
Mynumerouno will be able to run on anti-bleeding medication Lasix in the US in non-Stakes races and there are no rules on mandatory retirement if horses bleed on numerous occasions.
Schiavello said he hopes to fly over for what he describes as a ‘once-in-a-lifetime opportunity’ when it’s expected Mynumerouno will make his American debut later this year.
“He has arrived and is well and his temperature is normal and it’s all so far, so good,” he said.
“We had a form expert do some ratings and look at his pattern and see how he would adapt over there and what they like about him is he has tactical speed, he can settle in the first three or four and has a turn of foot.
“I am told his racing pattern suits the American style.”
Schiavello raced the horse’s dam Splash Of Moet to four wins and also owns Mynumerouno’s full brother Mysweetmoses, who won on debut at Kyneton in mid-May and is also trained by Ryan.
