Albany Swim Club returned back from Perth with strong results after attending the 2023 Short Course Officials Pentathlon at HBF Stadium on Sunday.
Junior swimmers Summer Lawson, Seth Lawson, Jason Wenbourne, Kalarney Williams and Malachy Williams represented Albany.
The pentathlon is a swim meeting made up of five events in which times achieved are recorded separately.
The pentathlon is scored by adding all of the times from these events together and then ranked for each of the age groups.
The swimmers with the fastest cumulative time in each age group (top 10) are awarded a trophy.
Summer Lawson finished eighth overall in the 14-year-old group while Malachy Williams finished sixth overall in the boys’ nine-year-old group and both received a trophy for their efforts.
Summer Lawson (34.32sec.) shined in the 50m butterfly and recorded a personal best in four of her five events.
Seth Lawson shaved 16.45sec. off his 100m individual medley entry time to finish in 1min.26.88sec.
Jason Wenbourne achieved a 100 per cent personal best rate across his races, including a 10.44 improvement in the 50m butterfly to stop the clock at 41.67sec.
Kalarney Williams (1.26.) took 36sec. from his 400m freestyle entry time, also finishing with a time of 40.45sec. in the 50m butterfly.
Malachy Williams (1:35.46) swam impressively in the 100m medley to finish with PBs in three of his five races.
Albany Swim Club finished the meet with an overall personal best rate of 84 per cent.
Albany Swim Club head coach Nola Osborne lauded the efforts of her team.
“The Short Course Officials Pentathlon was the second target meet for Albany Swim Club this season and it was fantastic to see these five athletes competing so well and holding their own against some of WA’s best swimmers,” she said.
“Malachy Williams’ results have cemented him in well within the top 10 for WA in the 50m freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly events along with the 100m individual medley.
“Summer (Lawson) has been training hard and this was a well-deserved achievement for Summer who only turned 14 at the end of March.
“Seth Lawson continues to push hard towards his sub-30 in his 50m freestyle and Kalarney Williams is showing a real niche for longer distance swimming which is exciting to see.
“Jason Wenbourne was solid all day, finishing with 100 per cent PBs.
“To finish the day with a total of 84 per cent PBs is a massive achievement and something these five athletes can be very proud of.
“We have some amazing talent coming through ASC.”
