Doha, Qatar: After finishing eighth in the recently-concluded QNB Stars League (QSL) season, Al Ahli have renewed contract with coach Nebojsa Jovovic for the 2023-24 season, the club announced yesterday.
Al Ahli on its website said the decision was taken to ensure stability in the management as club look for an improved show the next season to satisfy its fans.
“He holds a vision that is in line with the aspirations of Al Ahli club management and he seeks to achieve them in the next sports season,” the club said in a statement yesterday.
The statement added that Jovovic is currently working on a preparatory programme for the team to begin next month with home and away training camps.
Al Ahli got off to a strong start to the previous season but slipped following the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 break, eventually ending their campaign with a total of 24 points they garnered from six wins and as many draws.
Meanwhile, Umm Salal are expected to announce a contract with French coach Patrice Carteron to replace Moroccan coach Talal El Karkouri, according to reports.
The reports say the club has reached an agreement with the 52-year-old with the announcement likely to be made soon. Carteron has a rich experience of coaching Arab clubs as he has previously also led Al Nassr, Al Ahli, Zamalek, Raja CA and Esperance ST.
Umm Salal struggled in the season but managed to retain their place in the top flight after finishing 10th with 18 points.
It may be recalled that Al Rayyan are also set to announce a new coach after they parted ways with coach Nicolas Cordova last month. Portuguese Leonardo Jardim is expected to replace the Chilean.
Al Sadd, who missed their third consecutive QSL title, are also undergoing changes in the squad as they have recently announced the signing of Amin Hazbavi.
The Iranian defender, who left Foolad Khuzestan, has joined the Wolves on a five-year contract.
Brazilian Paulo Otavio will also be seen in Al Sadd colours after signing a three-year contract last month.
The new QSL season will kick off on August 17.
