The AFL community will wrap its collective arms around the shellshocked Singleton Roosters in the aftermath of the Greta bus crash.
Several of the 10 people killed in the tragic accident on Sunday night 11 June, as well as the 25 injured, were linked to the AFL Hunter Central Coast (AFLHCC) organisation.
They were returning from a wedding of another club member when the heart-breaking incident occurred.
To honour those who lost their lives, the Sydney Swans will wear black armbands in their clash with the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Friday 16 June, while the AFLHCC is altering its senior and junior draws this weekend out of respect to the Roosters.
The John Longmire-coached side boasts strong ties with the Hunter, with star Isaac Heaney recruited from the region.
There’s also a Singleton connection to the Swans’ Academy program.
CEO Tom Harley said the club’s thoughts were with all involved.
“We are deeply saddened by the horrific events over the weekend,” he stated.
“Our hearts go out to all of those impacted by this tragedy and our club offers its deepest condolences to their family and friends.
“We’re offering support to Academy athletes and their relatives, too.”
Meanwhile, the AFLHCC will cancel all senior fixtures, and postpone junior matches, this weekend.
Games are slated to resume on 24-25 June.
The junior round will be rescheduled to 13 August.
“We’re shocked and saddened by the bus tragedy in the Hunter Valley and the loss the community has suffered,” an AFL Hunter Central Coast spokesperson said.
“We send our deepest condolences to all those affected in the accident, especially those from the Singleton Roosters.
“Additionally, AFL NSW/ACT, with support from clubs and administrators in AFL Hunter Central Coast and AFL South Coast, has decided to postpone the annual representative match between AFL Hunter Central Coast and AFL South Coast, which was scheduled for 1 July in Newcastle.
“Further consultation with clubs will be undertaken to determine a way forward for 2023 representative football.
“AFLHCC thanks everyone who has offered their support while donations can be made to assist victims and families through Rotary at www.rawcs.org.au.”
