Fiona, a female Green sea turtle, captured the hearts of the Cooloola Coast community when she was rescued by the dedicated members of the Cooloola CoastCare Turtle Care team on 21 May.
Found in a poor condition on the mudflats at Carlo, Fiona was promptly taken to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital for rehabilitation.
Measuring an impressive 80cm in carapace (shell) length and weighing approximately 70kg, Fiona’s recovery journey was closely monitored and nurtured by the compassionate hospital staff. Their tireless efforts and expertise allowed Fiona to regain her strength and vitality.
Now, the time has come for Fiona to return to the wild, and her release has become a truly VIP event.
Usually when a turtle is ready to be returned to the wild, the Turtle Care team do the release honours; however, the Australia Zoo Wildlife family graciously offered their sea craft for Fiona’s momentous release, granting her a unique and unforgettable send-off.
On 7 June, Fiona was gently set free in the ocean, marking a joyous milestone in her incredible journey. The Cooloola Coast community joins in celebrating her return to the vast and nurturing ocean where she belongs.
The Cooloola CoastCare Turtle Care team extends their deepest gratitude to the exceptional staff at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital. Their dedication and expertise played a vital role in Fiona’s successful rehabilitation and ultimate release.
Fiona’s story serves as a reminder of the crucial work carried out by local conservation organisations and the remarkable impact that collaboration can have on preserving our precious marine life. It is a testament to the commitment of the Cooloola Coast community to protect and restore the natural habitats that these beautiful creatures call home.
