The Echuca Moama Bypass Stage 3 (Echuca-Moama Bridge) and the Meninya Street Precinct projects won Australian Institute of Landscape Architects NSW Awards on Thursday, June 8.
The annual awards are a recognition of the important work that landscape architects are doing and the ways they are addressing key environmental and community issues.
AILA NSW jury chair Suellen Fitzgerald said it was the mix of being a transformative work that did proper environmental and community consultation that allowed the bypass to stand out.
“[The Echuca Moama Bypass 3 and the Meninya Street Precinct Project] were great examples of an issue that’s important for so many country towns in New South Wales where there is an opportunity for a bypass to take heavy traffic off the main road of town,” she said.
She said this allowed the redesign for the main street to be improved because it was being done with the thought of working for the people and not just the traffic.
Ms Fitzgerald said the Echuca Moama Bypass should be used as an example for what could be done in other places across the state.
She said she was impressed this year not just by how many regional submissions were made but by the high quality.
“There were a lot of top-quality projects to choose from,” she said.
“We were delighted there were so many high-quality regional projects. Some were small scale and others were big transformative projects.”
The winners were announced on Thursday in Sydney at the annual awards dinner.
