A CONSULTATION on proposals to make major changes to primary schools in Cardiff has been launched.
The consultation, which runs until June 30, looks at a number of potential options for educational re-organisation in Cathays and Gabalfa, including merging, closing and relocating a number of primary schools.
It is hoped that the changes could help facilitate the relocation and increase in capacity of Welsh-medium primary school Ysgol Mynydd Bychan in Gabalfa.
Here is a look at the three options which are being considered by Cardiff Council.
Option 1
Under the first option being considered, the council is proposing to amalgamate Allensbank and Gladstone primary schools.
Under the move, both primary schools, in Gabalfa and Cathays respectively, would close and a new 420-place English-medium school would be created.
St Mocia’s Church in Wales Primary School, Cathays, would be transferred to the current Ysgol Munydd Bychan site and nursery provision would be provided at the school.
Ysgol Mynydd Bychan would be transferred to the current Allensbank Primary School site, increasing the size of Ysgol Mynydd Bychan from 192 places to 420 places.
It would also mean an increase in the number of nursery places at Ysgol Mynydd Bychan from 64 places to 96.
Option 2
The second option put forward by the council is to co-locate Allensbank and Galdstone primary schools by transferring Allensbank Primary to the current shared Gladstone Primary and St Monica’s CiW Primary site.
This would have the effect of reducing the the capacity of Allensbank Primary School’s 315 places to 210.
The age range at the school would be reduced from 3-11 to 4-11 by discontinuing nursery provision and the number of nursery places at Gladstone Primary School would increase from 64 places to 96.
If taken forward, option two would also see St Monica’s CiW Primary School transferred to the current Ysgol Mynydd Bychan site and a nursery provision established at the school.
Similarly to option one, the end result would be the transfer of Ysgol Mynydd Bychan to the current Allensbank Primary School site.
Option 3
The other option being considered is the transfer of Allensbank Primary School to the current Ysgol Mynydd Bychan site.
This would see the capacity of Allensbank Primary School reduce from 315 places to 192 places.
The end result would be the same as with options one and two – the transfer of Ysgol Mynydd Bychan to the Allensbank Primary School site.
The proposed changes would take effect from September 2025. You can find out more about the consultation here.
