May 12-13: Learn about the Filipino-American experience
The Houston Center for Contemporary Craft will round out its exhibition “Philippine-Made: The Work of Matt Manalo.” The exhibition encapsulates Manalo’s time living in the U.S. after immigrating with his family to Houston. It features self-reflective sculptures made from air-dry clay, bamboo and plant materials that have ties to Manalo’s home country of the Philippines.
May 12: Climb a treetop course at twilight
Aerial outdoor obstacle course Texas Tree Ventures is hosting a climbing event with a two-hour climb at twilight, finishing the night with snow cones and an activity for participants.
May 12: Party on the plaza at Avenida Houston
Head to downtown for a seasonal celebration from Houston First Corporation. This event takes place on two Fridays in May. Entertainment for May 12 is Tom Sandoval & The Most Extras, and Z’maji Glamouratti & Lone Star Discoteq. For May 19, Mustache The Band will be the live entertainment. Take pictures with a 12-foot selfie display within walking distance.

HTown Happy Hour brings an all-day event to POST Houston’s X Atrium and Z Atrium. See the works of local business owners, entrepreneurs, artists and authors, whose works will also be on sale during the event. In addition, the event will feature a DJ for live entertainment.

Children in second to fourth grades are invited to come to the Tomball Museum Center for a Kids’ Museum Day. This event will include a tour of the one-room schoolhouse, and children can make a whirligig, dye a bandana and write with a feather pen. Registration is required. All kids must wear old clothes and be accompanied by an adult.

Katy Christian Ministries and Parkway Fellowship will be distributing hundreds of pounds of free food and fresh produce to neighbors facing food insecurity. All community members are welcome to attend.
May 13: Explore diverse programs at a book festival
The Asia Society Texas Center is hosting the annual BIPOC Book Fest showcasing literary works that feature artists who are Black, Indigenous or people of color as well as other creatives of marginalized communities. The festival combines unique programming, panels, readings and poetry performances that celebrate Houston’s diversity. Speakers include Houston poet laureate emeritus Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton; local visual artist Reginald Adams; and Anita Jaisinghani, chef and owner of the restaurant Pondicheri; among others.

The Woodlands Township will host an Earth Day festival with live entertainment by The Buck Yeager Band, games, acrobatics, juggling, face painting and local organizations. Interactive displays feature local wildlife as well as tips for protecting waterways and recycling while teaching community members how to go green in their own homes. Those inspired to follow sustainable practices year-round are encouraged to connect with local organizations that need volunteers at the event. The event is for all ages.
