The Michigan Department of Transportation has more than 80 road and bridge projects that require lane closures scheduled to begin between Monday and Friday, June 26-30.
This week’s projects include a lane closure on I-94 near Battle Creek that’s expected to cause significant delays, as well as closures on I-696 in Oakland County, I-75 in Genesee and Monroe counties, U.S. 127 in Jackson County, and U.S. 2 in the Upper Peninsula.
Folks planning to drive into or out of downtown Detroit on Monday evening may also encounter congestion from the 2023 Ford Fireworks event that will close a number of roads beginning around 6 p.m.
Below are some of the road projects to watch out for this week based on the the state’s construction schedule. All projects are weather dependent.

I-94 in Calhoun County
A single-lane closure on westbound I-94 is expected to cause significant delays between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 27. The area of the highway is between Riverside Drive in Battle Creek and F Drive North in Emmett Township.
Road workers advise taking alternate routes to avoid the area Tuesday.
I-696 in Oakland County
Eastbound I-696 will be closed at M-10 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, and again between 7 p.m. Thursday, June 29, and 5 a.m. Friday, June 30. The project involves a bridge beam replacement over the Rouge River.
Drivers will be detoured using southbound M-10 before returning to the highway.
Additionally:
- The northbound Orchard Lake ramp to eastbound I-696 will be closed from 7 a.m. Monday through 3 p.m. Friday. Drivers will be detoured onto Orchard Lake, 12 Mile Road, and M-10 (Northwestern Highway) before returning to the highway.
- The eastbound I-696 ramp to southbound M-10 will be closed starting 7 a.m. Wednesday and continuing into late July. Drivers will be detoured via eastbound M-5, to 8 Mile Road (M-102), to northbound Telegraph Road (U.S. 24) and back to M-10.
The work is part of a $275 million project rebuilding the highway from I-275 to east of Telegraph Road, as well as rebuilding connecting ramps along the way. Work on eastbound lanes is scheduled for this year, with work on westbound lanes coming in 2024.
Special event in downtown Detroit
There will be a number of road closures Monday evening beginning at 6 p.m. as droves of people flock to downtown Detroit for the annual Ford Fireworks event.
Southbound M-10 (John C Lodge Freeway) will be closed from I-75 to Jefferson Avenue, as will Jefferson Avenue in both directions from I-375 to M-10, southbound Randolph Street (M-3) from Gratiot Avenue to Jefferson Avenue, and southbound I-375 from I-75 to Jefferson Avenue. A number of ramps in the area will also be closed.
U.S. 23 in Livingston County
Workers will begin shifting northbound traffic on U.S. 23 to the southbound side of the highway as part of an ongoing $162 million project to extend the U.S. Flex Route from north of 8 Mile Road to I-96 near Brighton.
Starting in the early morning Tuesday, northbound U.S. 23 will have one lane closed from Grand River Avenue to Spencer Road until about 2 p.m. During that time, eastbound and westbound I-96 ramps to U.S. 23 will have intermittent closures.
Then on Thursday, northbound U.S. 23 will be closed between Silver Lake and I-96 from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. During that time, the ramp to eastbound I-96 will have intermittent closures.

Shoulder work will require a single-lane closure on part of southbound U.S. 127/M-50 next week in Jackson County.
The closure is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday between Parnall Road and Springport Road. The closure will be identified via a portable changeable message sign both days.

The resurfacing of about 3.3 miles of U.S. 2 from Bessemer to Ironwood in Gogebic County begins Monday, with an estimated end date in early August. It’s a $1.8 million project that includes hot mix asphalt overlay and shoulder aggregate.
Another 5.2 miles of U.S. 2 will begin resurfacing work Wednesday. That work, which will cost about $1.4 million and begins at Wakefield, should take about two months to complete.
During the work period there will be intermittent single-lane closures on both stretches of U.S. 2 with a lane width restriction of 12 feet in place.
I-75 in Genesee County
Workers are scheduled to close the right lane of northbound I-75 in Genesee County for about 12 hours starting at 2 a.m. Monday. The work will stretch between Dort Highway and U.S. 23.
