Thies (ACS) Wins Reclamation Contract For A Mine In Australia

Thies Rehabilitation has been awarded a two-year contract with Idemitsu Australia’s Muswellbrook Coal Company (MCC) to provide rehabilitation services at the Muswellbrook coal mine in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales.

Thies Rehabilitation, owned by Cimic, a subsidiary of ACS Australia, will carry out the detailed design and construction of the post-mine landform, creating approximately 180 hectares of land using a mix of native ecosystems and grassland. Rehabilitated in MCC opencast mine.

This is the second contract with Idemitsu Australia for Thais Rehabilitation, which has been awarded a rehabilitation services contract for Idemitsu Australia’s Ensham mine in Queensland in July 2022.

Thies manager James Anderson said: “The contract for Maswellbrook reflects the growing strength of our relationship with Idemitsu Australia, and builds on the hard work and strong performance of our team at Ensham.

Muswellbrook Colliery is also of particular importance to Theis. Open pit operations of the mine began in 1944 and that contract allowed its founders, the Thies brothers, to start the company’s mining business in the Hunter region.

“Given our heritage at the Muswellbrook Coal Mine, Thies Rehabilitation is excited to be entrusted with the responsibility of delivering value to this site and community through post-mining transition,” said Anderson.

Idemitsu CEO Steve Kovac commented, “Muswellbrook Coal has been owned by Idemitsu since 1989 and has a proud history. Now that mining and processing at the site have been completed, Idemitsu is progressing with plans to develop the Muswellbrook Clean Industries Precinct at the site.”
