As the school holidays start, the World Science Festival Queensland kicks-off in Townsville. Ever wanted to eat liquid nitrogen soaked Cheetos?
On Friday about 500 school students were treated to a demonstration from Dr Rob Bell, host of the former long-running TV show Scope, at the Museum of Tropical Queensland.
The scientific festivities across the two-day festival include live archaeological ‘unearthings’ and exhibitors teaching about medicine, sharks and liquid nitrogen soaked Cheetos.
The World Science Festival Queensland is on at the Museum of Tropical Queensland until July 9.
Entry to the museum is free and the events run from 9.30am to 3pm on Saturday. The museum’s paid school holiday program then goes on until July 9.
World Science Festival Queensland tours the state throughout the year in conjunction with universities. The festival is concurrently on in Toowoomba for the school holidays and will head to Gladstone then Ipswich.
The state government has extended the festival and World Science Festival Brisbane’s funding by $9m to 2026/2027.
Arts Minister Leeanne Enoch said outside of New York, the festival was the only one of its kind.
“(The festival) … tours to regional areas across Queensland inspiring a love of learning and expanding awareness and understanding of the complex and changing world around us,” Ms Enoch said.
